  • William Contreras was named World Series MVP on Wednesday night after the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 at Tropicana Field for the first title in franchise history.

The catcher went 8 for 21 (.381) with four RBIs in the five-game Series and struck out once, CBS Sports reported. In Game 5, his sixth-inning double scored Christian Yelich for a 3-0 lead, and he came around on Cooper Pratt's sacrifice fly for the fourth run.

  • He did as much damage behind the plate. Contreras threw out four of the nine Rays who tried to steal, according to MLB.com. Tampa Bay had been 11 for 11 on steal attempts earlier in the postseason. He also won 10 ball-and-strike challenges under the automated system during the Series, the Associated Press reported, and Milwaukee's pitchers finished the Series with a 1.91 ERA and a .182 opponents' batting average, per MLB.com.

  • Contreras set a franchise record with 19 postseason hits, USA Today reported. He is the eighth catcher to win the award and the first since Kansas City's Salvador Perez in 2015, according to MLB.com.

"I don't have words to say for how I'm feeling," Contreras said through an interpreter, per CBS Sports. "I'm just appreciative of my teammates, appreciative of (manager Pat) Murphy. I want to thank all of them."

It is his second title of the year. Contreras, 28, won the World Baseball Classic with Venezuela in March. "I think I was going to find one way or another to bring that trophy home with me for sure," he said, according to USA Today.

  • He had company in the MVP conversation. Jackson Chourio hit .458 (11 for 24), rookie shortstop Pratt hit .421 (8 for 19) and Aaron Ashby threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings in the Series, CBS Sports noted.
