Tyrese Maxey scored 38 points Saturday night and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Charlotte Hornets 109-104 without LeBron James or Joel Embiid, rallying in the final five minutes to improve to 6-1.
The Sixers held both stars out of the second game of a back-to-back for injury management, the team announced. James was listed with low back sciatica and Embiid with right foot plantar fasciitis. It was the first game they missed together this season, ESPN's Kris Rhim reported, one night after James had 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in a 98-93 win over the Knicks.
Maxey carried the load without them. He made 13 of 23 shots, including 4 of 9 from 3-point range, and hit 8 of 9 free throws, according to the ESPN box score. Anfernee Simons added 19 off the bench, and Jaylen Brown, a game-time decision with a left patella injury, started and scored 16.

Charlotte looked like it had the game with five minutes left. Brandon Miller blocked VJ Edgecombe at the rim, then fed Moussa Diabate for a dunk on the other end and a 97-90 lead, the Associated Press reported. Philadelphia answered with two Simons baskets, and Maxey's free throws with 1:22 left put the Sixers ahead for good. Edgecombe hit a 3 from the left wing for a 105-101 lead, Sion James missed an open layup with 24 seconds left, and Brown iced it at the line with 5.2 seconds to go.
Grayson Allen had 27 points off the Hornets' bench and made 7 of 10 3-pointers. Miller scored 24 with five 3s. Charlotte was also on the second night of a back-to-back and was still without Coby White (calf) and Kon Knueppel (hamstring). The Hornets fell to 3-4.
Philadelphia won despite a rough night at the line, going 15 of 23, and made up for it by forcing 18 turnovers and scoring 23 points off them.
What's next: The Sixers host Chicago on Monday, and Saturday showed this team can win on the road with both of its biggest names in street clothes. Expect Philadelphia to keep resting James and Embiid on back-to-backs.
