Cleveland jumped out to a 15-point lead in the first quarter, the fourth straight game the Hawks have trailed by at least 15, according to the Associated Press. Atlanta scored 16 points in that quarter, its lowest for any period this season, then held the Cavaliers to 16 in the second. A 19-2 run turned a 35-24 deficit into a 43-37 lead.
The finish was tight. Donovan Mitchell's driving layup cut it to one with 20.6 seconds left. Alexander-Walker made two free throws with 15.3 seconds to go, and Mitchell got off two shots to tie on the last possession and missed both.
James Harden led Cleveland with 24 points, and Mitchell had 22 but needed 19 shots and went 1 of 9 from 3. Sam Merrill made four 3-pointers for 16 points, and Jarrett Allen added 14 points and eight rebounds. The loss ended a three-game Cavaliers winning streak.
Atlanta won the glass 53-45, with 15 offensive rebounds, and outscored Cleveland 50-46 in the paint, the ESPN box score shows. The Hawks also had 34 assists on 42 baskets.
The comeback was a group effort. Atlanta got its points from four players in double figures, and Johnson's passing kept the offense moving when CJ McCollum struggled. McCollum went 1 of 8 for five points but handed out eight assists. Jock Landale grabbed 10 rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.
Up next: The Hawks play at New Orleans on Saturday, and the Cavaliers visit Milwaukee the same night. Atlanta keeps digging itself early holes, and it will not come back from all of them.
