  • Stephen Curry scored 31 points and made eight 3-pointers as the Golden State Warriors came back from 25 points down to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 112-95 on Friday night at Chase Center. It was the NBA Cup group-play opener for both teams.

The Lakers looked like they were headed for a second straight blowout of Golden State. Luka Doncic had 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting with five 3-pointers in the first quarter alone, and Los Angeles led 38-15 after one, according to the AP.

Then the Warriors flipped the score. They won the second quarter by the same 38-15 margin and went to halftime tied at 53. The AP said Golden State became the first team in the shot clock era, playoffs included, to trail by 23 or more after one quarter and be tied or ahead at the half. Brandin Podziemski later gave the Warriors their first lead since they were up 2-0 early in the first quarter.

  • Curry took over from there. He hit back-to-back step-back 3s at 8:12 and 6:57 of the fourth, the second one pushing the lead to 101-84, according to ESPN's play-by-play. He shot 11 of 23, went 8 of 14 from deep and added six assists. Along the way he passed Dominique Wilkins for 18th place on the NBA's career scoring list.

  • Podziemski finished with 21 points, six assists and five rebounds. De'Anthony Melton scored 16 off the bench, and Georges Niang went 4 of 5 for 11. Golden State made 22 of 46 from 3 and had 31 assists on 38 baskets.

Doncic finished with 37 points, seven rebounds and five assists, though he shot 12 of 27 and 6 of 16 from deep after his hot start. Austin Reaves scored 21 but committed eight turnovers. Walker Kessler had 10 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks.

  • The Lakers turned the ball over 20 times and picked up four technical fouls, including one on Doncic late in the third quarter while the crowd booed him and one on Matisse Thybulle in the fourth. They shot 11 of 39 from 3.

The AP said the 17-point margin is the largest in the shot clock era for a team that trailed by 20 or more after the first quarter. The Warriors are 3-3, and the Lakers fell to 4-2. Los Angeles won the teams' season opener last week.

  • What's next: Both teams stay home Sunday night. The Warriors host the Clippers, and the Lakers host the Raptors. For Los Angeles, the first-quarter version of Doncic was the best basketball it has played all week, and it still lost by 17.
