Wilson played at NC State from 2008 to 2010, then transferred to Wisconsin for 2011. Seattle took him in the third round of the 2012 draft. He played 14 NFL seasons, made 10 Pro Bowls and led the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl title in the 2013 season.

  • Philip Rivers, who played at NC State from 2000 to 2003, is the other big name. He's 44 and in his sixth season coaching St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Ala., which reached the state semifinals in each of the last two seasons, per ESPN. He has never coached in college either, and he has told NC State he wants to finish his high school season, sources told ESPN.

    Why it matters

NC State is choosing between two famous alumni with no college coaching experience between them. Either hire would be a bet on name and recruiting pull, and on the staff each one could put around him. Timing matters too, because Rivers wants to finish his high school season first.

Watch for whether NC State interviews anyone with college head coaching experience, and for when Rivers' high school season ends.
