  • Three Red Sox defenders won American League Gold Glove Awards on Sunday night. Caleb Durbin took his first at third base, Ceddanne Rafaela repeated in center field and Wilyer Abreu won for the third straight year in right field. Rawlings announced the winners on ESPN, and the club confirmed all three.

  • It is the fifth season Boston has had three Gold Glove winners, after 1968, 1979, 2011 and 2018. The Red Sox and the Diamondbacks tied for the most winners on one team this year, according to MLB.com.

Durbin's win came in his first year in Boston. The Red Sox acquired him just before spring training, and he led AL third basemen with 13 defensive runs saved and seven outs above average. He also led all MLB third basemen with 31 double plays and 282 assists. He beat out finalists Brooks Lee of the Twins and Nick Loftin of the Royals, and he is only the second Red Sox third baseman to win the award. Frank Malzone won three straight from 1957 to 1959.

  • Rafaela played center field full time for the first time this season and led all MLB center fielders with 21 defensive runs saved. His 16 outs above average led AL center fielders. He is the first AL center fielder to win back-to-back since Kevin Kiermaier in 2015 and 2016.

Abreu's 28 defensive runs saved were the most of any player at any position, and he added 13 outfield assists. He is the sixth Red Sox player to win three Gold Gloves in a row, joining Malzone, Carl Yastrzemski, Fred Lynn, Dwight Evans and Mookie Betts. He and Rafaela are the third pair of outfield teammates to win in consecutive seasons.

Managers and coaches pick the winners and make up 75 percent of the vote, and they cannot vote for their own players. The SABR Defensive Index counts for the other 25 percent.

  • What's next: Fan voting for the Platinum Glove, the award for the best defender in each league, runs through Thursday at 11:59 p.m. ET at rawlings.com. Fans can back one Gold Glove winner per league, and the winners will be revealed at the Rawlings ceremony on Friday, Nov. 6. With Abreu and Rafaela both under 28, Boston's outfield defense looks set for a while.
