  • Wednesday's two Pacific-time baseball games reached different endings. In Los Angeles, Manny Machado supplied an early two-run homer and the Padres' bullpen protected a lead. In Seattle, the Mariners erased a four-run deficit and won on Josh Naylor's 10th-inning single. Both finals belong to the September 23 Eastern-date slate, and each has its own verified game report.

    The late-game reports

  • The Padres' game hinged on two fourth-inning moments. Machado's drive to center put San Diego up 2-0. Los Angeles then loaded the bases and cut the lead to one on Tommy Edman's sacrifice fly, but reliever David Morgan struck out Shohei Ohtani to end the threat. The Padres scored twice in the fifth and once in the ninth, while five relievers combined for 5 2/3 scoreless innings. San Diego finished the night a game ahead of the Cubs and Phillies for the National League's top wild-card spot.

  • Seattle's path was less direct. Yainer Diaz's two-run homer helped Houston race to a four-run lead, and his 10th-inning triple restored a one-run advantage after the Mariners had tied the game. In the bottom half, Julio Rodríguez drew a bases-loaded walk and Naylor singled home Randy Arozarena. The win kept Seattle mathematically alive in the AL West, although MLB's official report lays out a narrow route that still requires help from other teams.
