Anthony Edwards will have knee surgery Thursday and could miss up to two months

The Timberwolves star scored 47 in Monday's overtime loss at Cleveland while playing through the right knee problem. The absence would likely cost him a shot at All-NBA and the supermax that comes with it.

  • Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards will have an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee Thursday and could miss up to two months, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania on Tuesday night.

  • The news came a day after Edwards played 41 minutes and scored 47 points in Minnesota's 127-125 overtime loss at Cleveland. He was listed as questionable before that game, the second night of a back-to-back, and was cleared after pregame warmups.

Edwards started grabbing at the knee during Sunday's home-opening win over Toronto. Coach Chris Finch called it a "daily situation" before the Cleveland game and said he was not worried about it becoming a long-term problem.

  • It had been the best start of Edwards' career. He was averaging 33.3 points, second in the league behind Luka Doncic, with 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists on 48% shooting. The 47 in Cleveland was his second 45-point game of the season, making him the fourth player in NBA history with two in his team's first four games, according to ESPN Research.

He dealt with runner's knee in the same leg last season and missed nine of Minnesota's last 22 regular-season games managing it, then hyperextended his left knee in the first round of the playoffs. He missed 21 games in all, the most of his career, and the Wolves went 12-9 without him.

A two-month absence would keep Edwards short of the 65 games needed for MVP and All-NBA honors. An All-NBA spot would have made him eligible next summer for a four-year, $304 million supermax extension.

  • "It's not about individual accolades, All-NBAs, or anything like that," Edwards' manager, Justin Holland, told ESPN. "It's a single focus, winning a championship."
