USC beat No. 2 Ohio State 30-18 on Saturday night at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, handing the Buckeyes their second loss of the season. The Trojans scored 39 seconds into the game and never gave up the lead.
Jayden Maiava hit Trent Mosley for a 69-yard touchdown with 14:21 left in the first quarter, and Waymond Jordan's 9-yard run made it 14-3 in the first quarter. Maiava finished 15 of 22 for 222 yards and that one touchdown. Mosley caught five passes for 101 yards, and Mark Bowman's 70-yard catch and run in the second half set up King Miller's 1-yard touchdown for a 27-9 lead with 6:11 left in the third quarter.
Ohio State moved the ball and kept stalling. The Buckeyes outgained USC 464 to 338 and held the ball for 39 minutes and 28 seconds, but Caleb Hawkins kicked four field goals of 39, 34, 23 and 47 yards and the offense scored one touchdown. Ohio State also committed 11 penalties for 71 yards. Its biggest giveaway came midway through the third quarter, when Desman Stephens II forced Isaiah West to fumble at the USC 32 and Floyd Boucard recovered.

Luke Fahey, the true freshman starting in place of the injured Julian Sayin, threw every Ohio State pass. He completed 21 of 38 for 260 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. Bo Jackson ran for 121 yards on 21 carries and Isaiah West added 65.
Jeremiah Smith caught 10 passes for 83 yards, and his 1-yard touchdown catch with 2:12 left made him the Big Ten's career leader in receiving touchdowns, according to Ohio State and Big Ten Network. The two-point try failed at 27-18. Caden Chittenden's 32-yard field goal pushed the lead back to 12, and Ohio State's last drive ended on downs at the USC goal line with 36 seconds left.
USC's defense was led by Deven Bryant with 11 tackles and Stephens with nine. Chittenden made field goals of 36 and 32 yards and Ryon Sayeri hit from 54.
USC improves to 7-2 a week after scoring seven points at Wisconsin. Ohio State falls to 6-2.
What's next: Ohio State's path to the College Football Playoff now depends on winning out in the Big Ten. USC goes into November with a signature win to show the committee.
