The Oklahoma City Thunder are signing forward Ochai Agbaji to fill their open roster spot, ESPN and HoopsHype reported Friday, five days after starting wings Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace went down in a win over the LA Clippers.
Both injuries needed surgery. Williams fractured his fibula and dislocated his left ankle, and Wallace tore the labrum in his left shoulder, according to ESPN. Both recoveries will take several months, though the Thunder have not ruled either player out for the season.
That is two starters gone from the same position group in one afternoon, and Oklahoma City is reaching for a body who can guard on the wing and make an open three.

Agbaji fits that outline on paper. The No. 14 pick in the 2022 draft has averaged 7.2 points and 2.7 rebounds over 263 games, including 108 starts, with Utah, Toronto and Brooklyn. He is 26 and was waived by the New York Knicks in final cuts this month, so he arrives without a team and with a clear path to minutes.
HoopsHype said Agbaji will take Oklahoma City's 15th roster spot. The Thunder also recently signed Micah Peavy to a two-way contract, according to a post sharing that report, another sign the front office is filling the wing rotation with whatever it can find on the market.
This is a patch, and the Thunder know it. Agbaji will not replace what Williams gave them as a second scorer, and Wallace's on-ball defense is hard to find on the waiver wire. The bigger question for Oklahoma City is how much more of the load falls on its remaining stars while both are out, and whether a trade becomes the better answer if the absences stretch toward spring.
What to watch: When Agbaji's signing becomes official and how quickly he moves into the rotation, plus any update on timelines for Williams and Wallace.
