Ohio State fell out of the top 10 of the Associated Press Top 25 on Sunday for the first time in five years, dropping from No. 2 to No. 11 after its 30-18 loss at USC. UCLA moved into the top five for the first time in 25 years, and New Mexico earned the first AP ranking in program history.
It is the fourth straight week a No. 1 or No. 2 team has lost to an unranked opponent, according to the AP.
The AP top 10
- Miami (8-0). No. 1 for the third week in a row after escaping North Carolina 38-35. The Hurricanes got 62 of 70 first-place votes.
- Georgia (7-1). Up one spot, with seven first-place votes.
- Utah (8-0). Unbeaten and the only other team with a first-place vote.
- Notre Dame (7-1). Hosts Miami on Saturday in a top-five game.
- UCLA (8-0). The Bruins' first top-five ranking in 25 years.
- Indiana (8-1). Down two after needing overtime to beat Minnesota 23-16.
- BYU (7-1).
- Kentucky (7-1).
- Alabama (6-2).
- Texas (6-2).
Next up is No. 11 Ohio State (6-2), outside the AP top 10 for the first time in five years.

What the coaches say
The AFCA Coaches Poll, also released Sunday, is a little kinder to the Buckeyes. It has Ohio State at No. 10, down eight spots, with Indiana third and Utah fourth ahead of UCLA at No. 5 and Notre Dame at No. 6. The coaches also moved USC up eight places to No. 17 and put New Mexico at No. 25.
Why it matters this week
The poll sets up the game of the weekend. Miami at Notre Dame is No. 1 against No. 4, and the winner keeps the inside track to a top seed before the first College Football Playoff rankings land. For Ohio State, two losses with a month left means there is little room for a third.
UCLA and Utah are the two unbeaten teams in the top five besides Miami, and both now sit ahead of a one-loss Indiana team that was No. 4 a week ago.
What to watch: Miami at Notre Dame on Saturday, and where Ohio State and UCLA land when the playoff committee releases its first rankings.
