LSU’s pass rush puts Kentucky’s third downs under pressure in Lexington

  • Kentucky's third downs are an obvious place to start watching its Saturday night meeting with LSU. Will Stein has acknowledged the Wildcats' problems converting those opportunities, and the visiting Tigers arrive with 22 sacks and a defense allowing just 58.4 rushing yards per game. Kickoff at Kroger Field is 7 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

Both teams enter 4-1. Kentucky is 2-1 in the SEC; LSU is 1-1. The Wildcats are No. 25 in the coaches poll, while LSU is No. 10 in the AP poll.

Kentucky's official preview says Stein sees execution, rather than the scheme itself, as the problem with the offense's third downs against South Carolina. That matters against a defense that has held opponents to 18 conversions in 69 third-down attempts. Avoiding long-yardage situations would give Kenny Minchey a better chance to keep drives moving before LSU's rush takes over.

  • Princewill Umanmielen has eight sacks this season, and freshman defensive tackle Deuce Geralds has five. LSU leads the SEC in total defense at 220.6 yards allowed per game. The Tigers' preparation for Lexington appears in this official team post.

  • Kentucky brings evidence that it can recover from a bad start. Its 17-point comeback at South Carolina was the largest road comeback in program history, and Minchey's two-point pass to Willie Rodriguez finished the overtime win. Freshman Kenny Darby caught 12 passes in that game, a Kentucky freshman record.

LSU's offense presents a different test after a 63-14 win over McNeese. College Football News points out that the Tigers are still looking for their first road victory this season following their loss at Ole Miss. Kentucky has won three straight since losing to Alabama.

  • For viewers, the useful comparison is how the Wildcats handle the first pressure situations. A third-down completion or a clean pocket would tell more about this matchup than simply repeating last week's LSU score. Kentucky's comeback gives it reason to trust Minchey, but sustaining possessions against this front will demand more consistent execution.

LSU and Kentucky last met on the field in 2021, when the Wildcats won 42-21 in Lexington. Kentucky's official notes also state that the NCAA later vacated that result; it should not be silently counted as an official series win.

Kentucky’s Friday weather advisory kept kickoff at 7 p.m. Eastern while warning of rain and wind. The school postponed the halftime drone show and said it would announce any further changes.
