Indiana actually started fast. The Pacers scored 42 points in the first quarter, then managed 46 in the next two quarters combined while Miami put up 67. The Heat shot 54 of 93, made 18 3s, handed out 38 assists and scored 64 points in the paint.
The Pacers were down to 11 available players. Tyrese Haliburton is out at least a couple of weeks with a hamstring strain, and Obi Toppin's back went out before shootaround Friday morning, acting coach Lloyd Pierce said. Pierce was filling in for Rick Carlisle, who was at his father's funeral in Ogdensburg, New York.
Quenton Jackson led Indiana with 24 points, and Andrew Nembhard scored 22 with nine assists. Pascal Siakam had 13 on 5-of-17 shooting and missed all five of his 3-point tries.
Miami has won two straight and is 2-4. Indiana is also 2-4, and the AP pointed out that every team to reach the NBA Cup knockout round has gone 4-0 or 3-1 in group play, so the Pacers have little room left in their group.
What's next: The Pacers host Brooklyn on Sunday. The Heat head west to face the Lakers on Monday, after Miami's 0-4 start turned into two straight wins.
