Cubs beat Red Sox 6-2 in Tropicana Field finale after storm relocation

  • Jared Carrabis' video captured a strange final scene from the 2026 regular season: the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs playing under the roof at Tropicana Field. The X clip shows Chicago leading 3-2 in the seventh inning, with Patrick Sandoval pitching and the venue's signage visible behind home plate. Carrabis described the ballpark harshly and said there was a real chance of World Series games being played there again. That is his opinion, not a description of the stadium's postseason assignment.

  • MLB's official game record identifies the event as the September 27 Cubs at Red Sox finale at Tropicana Field. Chicago won 6-2. Alex Bregman went 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs, and the Cubs finished the regular season with the win. Sandoval entered in relief and struck out five over 4 2/3 innings, according to MLB's game coverage.

  • The venue change was part of the story. MLB moved the game from Fenway Park after a forecast of severe weather along the Northeast coast. The original schedule called for a Saturday night game at Fenway; the replacement was a Sunday afternoon game at the Rays' home in St. Petersburg. The Red Sox still served as the designated home team, although the clubs used the visitors' clubhouse and dugout.

  • By the time the Cubs and Red Sox reached the finale, the October paths had already been set. MLB's final bracket put Boston in a best-of-three American League Wild Card Series at Yankee Stadium and Chicago in a National League Wild Card Series at San Diego. The regular-season finale therefore did not change either club's postseason opponent or home-field path.

  • The confirmed postseason schedule sends the Red Sox to New York and the Cubs to San Diego first. Carrabis' speculation about later games at Tropicana Field does not establish an MLB venue decision. The World Series is scheduled for Oct. 23-31.

  • For one afternoon, though, the ballpark was the home of a relocated Red Sox game, the final score was Cubs 6, Red Sox 2, and the last regular-season broadcast gave an unusual venue one more national baseball moment.
