BYU ends Notre Dame’s unbeaten start as Miami survives Florida State

Bachmeier’s late pass, Miami’s double-overtime finish and Oregon’s final drive lead the October 17 prime-time and late results.

  • Bear Bachmeier's late touchdown pass ended Notre Dame's unbeaten start, while Miami needed two overtimes to get past Florida State in the October 17 college football night games. Oregon's winning touchdown arrived with 28 seconds left, and North Dakota State scored on a missed field goal and a failed two-point attempt.

Nine of the 22 games in this prime-time and late slate finished with a margin of eight points or fewer. Late scoring drives decided the games at BYU, Oregon and UTSA, while Miami finished its rivalry win with an interception.

BYU and Miami survive different endings

BYU beat Notre Dame 28-24 after Bachmeier found Walker Lyons for a six-yard touchdown with 1:47 remaining. The quarterback also ran for two scores and caught a touchdown pass from Kyler Kasper, accounting for all four Cougars touchdowns.

  • The result stood, but the finish drew a subsequent acknowledgment of an officiating error. The Associated Press reported that the Big 12 said time remained when CJ Carr's final incomplete pass hit the ground and the replay crew incorrectly cleared the play. BYU finished the game 6-0; Notre Dame fell to 6-1.

ESPN published these final moments from Notre Dame at BYU:

  • Miami's 43-35 win over Florida State ended with Bryce Fitzgerald's interception in the second overtime. Malachi Toney caught the go-ahead three-yard touchdown from Darian Mensah before the successful two-point conversion. A holding penalty erased a potential Florida State touchdown on its answering possession.

  • Duce Robinson had forced overtime with a 75-yard touchdown catch late in regulation. Toney finished with 154 receiving yards and two touchdowns as the Hurricanes remained unbeaten.

UTSA also needed its quarterback to answer a late deficit. Owen McCown's 41-yard touchdown pass to A'Marion Peterson with 2:24 left beat Navy 38-34. Cooper DiLeva's 53-yard field goal with 57 seconds remaining gave San Diego State a 26-23 rivalry win over Fresno State.

In Fargo, Jackson Williams returned a missed field goal 100 yards as the first half expired. Matthew Stenbroten later returned a fumble on Nevada's two-point try for two Bison points in North Dakota State's 31-17 win.

Stanford's Micah Ford tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns against Elon. Conner Weigman threw five touchdown passes as Houston edged Oklahoma State, while TCU kept Baylor out of the end zone in a 17-6 win. The complete slate and individual game reports follow.
