Stephon Gilmore returns to Foxborough to retire a Patriot

Stephon Gilmore returned to Foxborough on Friday to retire as a Patriot, bringing one of the defining defensive careers of the late New England era back to the franchise that produced its peak. The Patriots announced the appearance and streamed his 2:10 p.m. Eastern retirement press conference through their official channels.

Gilmore spent four seasons with New England and helped the Patriots win Super Bowl LIII. His 2019 season remains the headline: he became the first Patriot named NFL Defensive Player of the Year, led the league with six interceptions and finished with 20 passes defensed. New England also finished first in total defense at 275.9 yards per game and allowed 14.1 points per game.

The return gives the Patriots a chance to frame Gilmore's career around more than one highlight. His late interception in the Super Bowl is the cleanest snapshot, but the broader value was the weekly coverage responsibility and the turnover production that made the 2019 defense so difficult to attack.

Gilmore's retirement also lands during a new Patriots season. The club is preparing for Sunday's home opener against Pittsburgh, while a former champion returns to the building with the defensive standard of his best New England team still visible in the current conversation.
