Massachusetts won the first football meeting between two new Mid-American Conference members Saturday night, beating Sacramento State 35-6 on the road. William Watson III ran for two touchdowns and threw another, and the Minutemen did not allow the Hornets into the end zone. ESPN’s final scoring log shows UMass building a 21-6 halftime lead, then adding a defensive touchdown and another rushing score after the break.
Watson started the scoring with a 13-yard run at 11:48 of the first quarter. Sacramento State’s Grant Meadors answered with a 20-yard field goal early in the second, but Watson broke free for a 32-yard touchdown run less than five minutes later. Meadors’ second field goal cut it to 14-6. UMass took back a two-score lead before halftime when Watson found Max Dowling from seven yards out. Those three Watson touchdowns accounted for all of the Minutemen’s points through two quarters.
The defense added the next blow. Timmy Hinspeter returned an interception 49 yards for a touchdown 1:29 into the third, pushing UMass ahead 28-6. Kezion Dia-Johnson’s three-yard run later in the quarter produced the final score. Sacramento State held the ball for more than 31 minutes but never scored a touchdown, even with 323 total yards. The Hornets had three turnovers, including the pick that became seven immediate points; UMass did not turn the ball over.

Watson completed 11 of 16 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown, and he led his team in rushing with 72 yards on seven carries, according to the final ESPN box score. UMass finished with 232 rushing yards and 333 total. Sacramento State’s Jackson Sharman threw for 221 yards on 24 completions but also had an interception. The Hornets ran for 102 yards, converted six of 15 third downs and could not turn that possession volume into a touchdown. UMass went three of 10 on third down, making its scoring efficiency and turnover margin central to the result.
The university’s official pregame note called this UMass’ MAC opener and its first trip to Sacramento State. The final made that first meeting one-sided on the scoreboard even though the total-yardage gap was only 10 yards. Watson produced the early offense, Hinspeter’s return widened the margin immediately after halftime, and the defense kept a long-passing Sacramento State game from crossing the goal line. The Minutemen leave the road opener with a conference win supported by a clean turnover line and five touchdowns.
