VanVleet and Irving return as Rockets and Mavericks open in Houston
Wednesday’s opener pairs two returning guards with Dusty May’s NBA coaching debut; Houston’s Steven Adams remains questionable.

Fred VanVleet and Kyrie Irving are set to return to regular-season basketball Wednesday when Houston hosts Dallas, giving both teams a familiar guard alongside their younger stars.
The Rockets and Mavericks tip off at 8:30 p.m. Eastern at Toyota Center, according to the NBA’s official game listing. Houston gets VanVleet back after he missed last season following a torn right ACL. Dallas expects Irving’s first regular-season appearance since he tore the ACL in his left knee on March 3, 2025, the Mavericks reported in their opening-game preview.
Their returns also frame Dusty May’s first regular-season game as an NBA head coach. Cooper Flagg begins his second season beside Irving as Dallas works through a change in coaching and personnel.

A deeper Houston rotation, with a late injury question
Field Level Media reported that Rockets coach Ime Udoka plans to use a 10-player rotation early in the season, easing returning players back into heavier workloads. VanVleet rejoins a group that includes Kevin Durant, Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson, with Marcus Smart and Bogdan Bogdanovic adding veteran options.
Houston’s frontcourt availability still needs watching. The NBA’s 2 p.m. Eastern injury report lists Steven Adams questionable with right calf tightness or soreness. Julian Phillips is also questionable because of illness. VanVleet and Irving are not listed with restrictions in that report.
Dallas is missing Santi Aldama, Dereck Lively II, Caleb Martin and Tarik Biberovic. Jett Howard is doubtful with right calf tightness or soreness. The absences of Aldama and Lively leave May with fewer frontcourt options, a concern Field Level Media identified in its preview.
May gets an immediate test
The teams split two preseason games in China. Those exhibitions gave May an early look at Houston’s physicality, but Wednesday begins the regular-season record for both clubs.
In the Mavericks’ preview, May emphasized Houston’s pursuit of rebounds and loose balls and the need for Dallas to stay alert even after securing possession. That is a practical opening test for the group around Flagg and Irving: finish defensive possessions, protect the ball and handle the pressure Houston applies.
Dallas’ first eight games include two against Houston and two against San Antonio. Its other opponents in that opening stretch are Oklahoma City, Sacramento, Indiana and Miami.
