Arkansas State trailed Kennesaw State by seven points in the third quarter, but Trey Owens’ touchdown run tied the game and Clune Van Andel’s 33-yard field goal delivered a 17-14 win Saturday at Centennial Bank Stadium. The Red Wolves improved to 2-2; the Owls fell to 1-3. Neither team committed a turnover, leaving a handful of scoring drives to decide a close contest.
The first quarter ended scoreless. Owens put Arkansas State ahead in the second with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Summers. Kennesaw State answered before halftime on Boogie Woods III’s eight-yard run. Woods scored again from six yards with 4:24 left in the third quarter, giving the Owls their first lead at 14-7. Owens responded with a two-yard touchdown run just over three minutes later. That set up a fourth quarter in which one successful kick was enough.
Van Andel made his 33-yard field goal with 8:19 remaining. The live ESPN scoring record shows no points after that kick. Arkansas State’s defense held the lead, turning a game that had swung on two Kennesaw rushing scores into its own three-point victory. The box score does not by itself establish every late defensive decision, so the account stops at the verified scoring and team totals.

Owens completed 24 of 31 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown. Jaylen Bonelli caught six passes for 78 yards, while Solomon Baggett led the Red Wolves on the ground with 63 yards on 13 carries. Arkansas State gained 363 total yards and 22 first downs. It held the ball for 32:40 and went five of 12 on third down. Those figures show a modest production edge rather than a runaway performance.
Kennesaw State had a strong rushing night of its own. Woods ran 19 times for 101 yards and both Owls touchdowns. The visitors gained 197 yards on the ground and 326 total, while Rickie Collins completed 17 of 24 passes for 129 yards. Kennesaw converted seven of 13 third downs, better than Arkansas State’s rate, and had no giveaway. The Owls’ difficulty was converting that steady movement into a fourth scoring drive after taking the third-quarter lead.
The Arkansas State schedule identifies this as a home date against Kennesaw State; its game-theme announcement placed it during Family Night. On the field, the result hinged on Arkansas State answering immediately after Woods’ second score and then converting the late field-goal chance. The final, statistics and play times are from the verified ESPN game record, with no unconfirmed coach quote added.
