  • Trey Smack kicked a 26-yard field goal with 5:23 left in overtime to give Green Bay a 20-17 win over the New York Jets on Sunday, completing a comeback that began with the Packers down 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Green Bay’s route back depended on all three phases. Jordan Love found Christian Watson for a touchdown, Skyy Moore’s long punt return set up the tying kick, and the defense stopped New York before and during overtime. Smack supplied the final points after the Packers finally found room to move.

His 34-yard field goal tied the game at 17 late in regulation. Moore had returned a punt 63 yards to create the short-field opportunity, changing the position of a game in which sustained offensive progress had been difficult.

  • Two sacks change overtime

The Jets received the overtime kickoff but could not turn that possession into an advantage. Barryn Sorrell and Lukas Van Ness sacked Geno Smith on successive plays. New York was pushed into a long-yardage situation and punted, leaving Green Bay to pursue the winning score.

Kaleb Johnson’s 11-yard run started the response. Love then completed a pass to Chris Brooks, with a late-hit penalty adding yardage, before finding Matthew Golden to put the Packers inside the 10. Green Bay sent Smack out on first-and-goal and ended the game.

Love finished 16 of 29 for 145 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Golden caught four passes for 58 yards, and Watson added four for 41 yards. The totals were modest, but the Packers made the necessary completions after spending much of the afternoon fighting penalties and poor field position.

  • New York loses its cushion

The Jets led 14-7 after Smith’s five-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson in the third quarter. A recovered fumble put them in position to extend the lead, but Green Bay held them to Jason Sanders’ field goal and a 17-7 margin.

Love’s three-yard touchdown pass to Watson brought the Packers within three with 7:58 remaining. After the tying field goal, Green Bay also stopped a fourth-and-one attempt near midfield. Its offense failed to capitalize before regulation ended, but the defensive stand prevented New York from extending a potential winning drive.

Smith completed 27 of 41 passes for 247 yards and one touchdown. The Jets struggled to support him on the ground: Breece Hall carried 16 times for 29 yards. Van Ness finished with 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks in a disruptive performance that continued into overtime.

Both teams are 1-1. Green Bay’s relief comes with significant injury concerns after receiver Jayden Reed and tackle Zach Bako-Bewele were carted off on consecutive plays of the opening series. The team reported a neck injury for Reed and a knee injury for Bako-Bewele; their availability beyond Sunday was not established by the game report.

The Packers overcame an untidy afternoon rather than resolving every problem. They nevertheless left New Jersey with the result their late defensive stops and special-teams work made possible.
