Texas held off Tennessee 20-17 at Neyland Stadium, winning its SEC opener and moving to 4-0. The Longhorns built a 20-10 lead before the Volunteers made the final minutes uncomfortable.
Raleek Brown supplied both Texas touchdowns. He opened the scoring with a 9-yard run in the first quarter, then broke through from four yards with 5:41 left in the fourth. Gianni Spetic added field goals from 22 and 44 yards, giving Texas points on four separate possessions. The final Texas scoring drive produced the decisive touchdown after the teams had traded field goals and the game had been tied at 10.
Tennessee's best swing came immediately after halftime. Qua Moss returned a punt 57 yards for a touchdown, erasing Texas' 10-3 lead and bringing Neyland Stadium level. Texas answered with Spetic's 44-yard field goal, then Brown's late run made the margin 20-10. Tennessee stayed alive when Faizon Brandon found Mike Matthews for a 30-yard touchdown with 1:22 remaining, but Texas prevented a second tying score.

Brandon finished 17 of 29 for 145 yards and one touchdown. Matthews caught four passes for 72 yards and the score, while Tennessee's offense totaled 221 yards, including 151 through the air and 70 on the ground. The Volunteers converted only four of 16 third downs, though they avoided a turnover. Texas had 262 total yards, went 3-for-12 on third down and lost two turnovers, making the road win a defensive and field-position result rather than a statistical runaway.
The final margin concealed how little room either offense had. Tennessee held the ball for 31:23 and reached 22 first downs, eight more than Texas, but the Volunteers could not sustain third-down drives. Texas held possession for 28:37 and scored on both Brown rushing attempts that reached the end zone. The Longhorns' defense also held Tennessee to 70 rushing yards, forcing Brandon to carry the late comeback through the air. Texas led 7-3 after the first quarter and 10-3 at halftime, then had to respond when Moss' return tied it in the third. That progression turned what had looked like an early defensive win into a possession-by-possession finish.
Texas improved to 4-0, including a 1-0 conference record, while Tennessee fell to 3-1. The result gives Texas a road SEC win in Knoxville and leaves Tennessee with a narrow loss despite avoiding a turnover. Texas' two field goals mattered because Tennessee had erased a seven-point deficit with Moss' punt return. Spetic's 44-yarder put the Longhorns back in front in the third quarter, and Brown's later run gave them enough room to absorb the final Tennessee touchdown. The only fourth-quarter touchdowns were Brown's run and Matthews' answer. The official game center lists Neyland Stadium as the site; the event's final scoring log supplies the seven scoring plays.
