  • The Ottawa Senators beat Brady Tkachuk and the Florida Panthers 5-1 on Wednesday night at Canadian Tire Centre, in Tkachuk's first game in Ottawa since the Senators traded their former captain in June.

Tim Stutzle, Claude Giroux, Shane Pinto, Warren Foegele and Stephen Halliday scored for Ottawa (7-3-0). Florida (5-3-2) had won three straight.

Tkachuk spent eight seasons with the Senators, five as captain. The crowd booed him throughout and chanted "We don't need you!" at him, and some fans threw Tkachuk jerseys onto the ice, according to the Associated Press. He scored first anyway, on a power play midway through the first period off a feed from his brother, Matthew.

  • Stutzle tied it later in the first. Giroux put Ottawa ahead midway through the second with a shot through traffic from the top of the slot, his second goal of the season, and Pinto made it 3-1 at 17:18.

The Senators lost Linus Ullmark early in the third. He made a pad save on Tkachuk and needed help getting off the ice. Ullmark stopped 17 of 18 shots, and Samuel Ersson stopped the only shot he faced over the final 16:25. The AP report did not include an update on his condition.

The third period got heated. Sam Bennett fought Ridly Greig, and later the Tkachuk brothers and Bennett got into it with Senators players in front of Ottawa's bench, where Brady Tkachuk had a heated exchange with Dylan Cozens. Foegele finished a pass from Cozens at the eight-minute mark for a 4-1 lead, and Halliday scored off a Stutzle drop pass to make it 5-1.

  • Akira Schmid made 25 saves for Florida.

Ottawa traded Tkachuk to Florida on June 21 for three first-round picks and a second-rounder. Senators general manager Steve Staios said at the time that the trade followed a trade request.

Up next: both teams play again Thursday at 7 p.m. ET. Ottawa hosts San Jose, and Florida visits Pittsburgh.
