Houston Rockets guard Bruce Thornton is back with the parent club after a 31-point G League debut, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers announced Saturday. Thornton, the No. 31 overall pick in the 2026 draft out of Ohio State, had been assigned to the Vipers on Thursday so he could play meaningful minutes after a quiet start on Houston's bench.
In Friday's Vipers season opener, a 120-116 home loss to the Austin Spurs, Thornton finished with 31 points, eight rebounds and five assists. He shot 10-of-24 from the field, 4-of-10 from three and 3-of-3 from the line, per the Vipers' final post and Rockets beat writer Lachard Binkley. The Vipers trailed by as many as 20 before cutting the deficit late. Thornton also posted a plus-16 in that debut.
Thornton had barely played for Houston before the assignment, totaling sparse garbage-time minutes and a 2.0 scoring average across early Rockets appearances, per NBA.com. The Rockets listed him out for Saturday's game at Phoenix with a G League assignment on the overnight injury report, then recalled him later Saturday after the Vipers' official announcement. The one-game Vipers stint matches the shuttle pattern other 2026 second-rounders use when NBA snaps are short.

For dynasty and prospect trackers, the rising signal is the scoring night plus the quick recall. Thornton showed he can carry a G League offense when given the ball. Keep him on the watch list in deep formats and in Rockets prospect rankings. Do not expect a sudden NBA rotation jump while Houston sits near the top of the West, but log the debut line as the first real sample of his pro scoring.
What to watch: whether he is available for the Rockets' next home game, if Houston sends him back down for another Vipers start, and whether the 31-point night changes how the staff uses him in garbage time.
