Rin Fukuda gave Ichiro's Tokyo Dome showcase its clearest baseball answer
Ichiro threw 127 pitches and struck out 17 in a 7-0 win, but Fukuda's three hits showed why the annual event exists: to give Japan's high school girls a serious stage and a demanding opponent.

Ichiro's 127-pitch, 17-strikeout shutout was the headline from Sunday's Tokyo Dome exhibition. Rin Fukuda supplied the game's clearest answer. The Kobe Koryo High School infielder collected three hits against Ichiro as his KOBE CHIBEN team beat Japan's high school girls selection 7-0 on Sept. 13.
Ichiro, 52, completed all nine innings, allowed five hits and reached 136 kilometers per hour while mixing a fastball with a slider, curve and other off-speed pitches. The performance was remarkable on its own. The more useful story was that the event gave a high school player a nationally visible chance to face him in a real game setting.

MLB English full game: selected girls team vs Ichiro Selection
Read source ↗ Fukuda led off the game by taking Ichiro's first pitch into center field, then stole second, according to MLB Japan's account. She added two more hits later. Ichiro's response, reported by Nikkan Sports, was recognition of the quality of the at-bat and the player, rather than a dismissal of the result as an exhibition.

That distinction explains the event's purpose. The annual KOBE CHIBEN game began in 2021 as a matchup between Ichiro's team and a national high school girls selection. The official event site describes it as a showcase built around the high school girls baseball strengthening program. The 2026 game was the sixth meeting, with KOBE CHIBEN winning for the sixth straight year, but the score is only one part of the record.
MLB Japan reported that girls baseball participation in Japan has roughly doubled over the last decade. The article cited growth from about 700 players across 19 high school teams in 2015 to nearly 3,000 players across more than 60 teams in 2025. A Tokyo Dome crowd of more than 25,000 gave the September game another layer of visibility.

TBS Sports official highlights: Ichiro 17-strikeout shutout
Read source ↗ The official MLB English full-game video preserves both sides of the occasion: Ichiro working through a complete game and the girls' selection taking its turns against him. The event also included former major leaguers Hideki Matsui and Kazuo Matsui on Ichiro's side, which raised the level of attention around every plate appearance.
Fukuda's three hits kept the game from becoming a simple longevity clip. Ichiro's outing will travel as a statistical curiosity, but the more durable image is a high school player meeting the moment against a Hall of Famer in a full stadium. That is the platform the organizers are trying to build for women's baseball in Japan.
