  • Fresno State's last big run made sure Rice's comeback lasted less than two minutes. Rayshon Luke broke a 52-yard touchdown with 7:37 left Saturday night, and the Bulldogs beat the Owls 38-24 in Fresno. Rice had just pulled within seven on Jacurri Brown's 50-yard scoring run. Luke's answer restored a two-touchdown margin and closed the scoring.

The Bulldogs trailed 17-14 at halftime despite twice drawing level in the second quarter. Ben Grice gave Rice the early lead with an 88-yard run, the longest scoring play of the night. Jayden Mandal tied it at seven on a six-yard pass to Josiah Freeman, only for Brown to find Max Mosey for a 40-yard touchdown. Mandal responded again, this time connecting with Jahlil McClain from 28 yards out with 1:04 remaining before the break. Enock Gota's short field goal on the final play sent Rice to the locker room ahead. The ESPN play-by-play confirms that sequence.

Fresno State took control after halftime. Manaki Watanabe's field goal tied the game, then Mandal hit Ezekiel Avit for a seven-yard touchdown and the Bulldogs' first lead. Julius Gillick finished a fourth-quarter drive with a five-yard run to make it 31-17. Brown's long run kept the Owls alive, but Luke immediately delivered the night's last swing.

  • Luke gained 167 yards on only 11 carries. Mandal completed 22 of 34 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, while Fresno State totaled 459 yards. Rice actually gained slightly more, 463, including 344 on the ground. Brown ran for 141 yards on 19 carries, and Grice added 109 on seven. Those figures underline how much offense Rice generated without holding its second-half lead. The ESPN final box score records two Rice turnovers to none for Fresno State, another meaningful difference in a game with explosive runs on both sides.

The win moved Fresno State to 3-1 in the programs' first meeting since their 2014 Hawai'i Bowl matchup, a date noted in Fresno State's game preview. Rice fell to 1-3. The Bulldogs visit Washington State next Saturday; Rice returns home to face UTSA. Fresno State can take a practical lesson from this one: its offense found responses every time Rice threatened to seize control, and its defense kept the Owls scoreless after Luke's clinching run. The final 14-point margin was wider than the game felt at halftime, when the Owls still had the lead, and late in the fourth quarter, when Brown's sprint narrowed it again. Fresno State's offense had to produce two separate recoveries to win it.
