  • Jamal Shead and the Raptors have agreed to a three-year, $24 million extension that keeps the reserve guard under contract through the 2029-30 season, his agent KJ Smith told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Thursday. Toronto is retaining a player whose value has come from defending, running the second unit and staying available.

Shead played in all 82 regular-season games last season, then took on a larger role when Immanuel Quickley was injured during Toronto’s first-round playoff series against Cleveland. He made four starts in that seven-game series and averaged nine points, five assists and 1.4 steals.

  • The agreement comes two seasons after Shead entered the NBA as the 45th pick in the 2024 draft. He is 24, and the contract gives Toronto several more years with a guard it developed under coach Darko Rajaković.

  • Passing and pressure carry the value

Dan Devine of Yahoo Sports described Shead’s contribution as a combination of careful ball handling and pressure defense. His 3.96-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio last season ranked among the best for rotation guards, according to NBA Advanced Stats cited in Devine’s report.

His shooting leaves room to improve. Kurt Helin of NBC Sports reported that Shead made 32.1 percent of his three-point attempts last season. That makes his ability to create for teammates and disrupt opposing guards especially important: Toronto is paying for a useful rotation role before a more consistent jumper has arrived.

The playoff workload showed how that role can expand. Devine reported that Shead averaged 32 minutes during the Cleveland series while filling in for Quickley. His regular-season scoring average was 6.6 points, according to ESPN and NBC Sports.

  • For Toronto, the extension settles one decision while others remain. Helin noted that RJ Barrett is entering the final year of his contract. Securing Shead gives the Raptors a known cost for their backup point guard as they consider the rest of the roster.

The reported deal runs through three additional seasons. Its financial terms were reported by Charania from Shead’s agent.
