  • Purdue coach Matt Painter has signed a contract extension that runs through the 2030-31 season, the school announced Tuesday.

  • ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that the amended deal raises Painter's salary to $7 million for this season, up from $5.2 million, with $50,000 increases each year after. That would put him among the 10 highest-paid coaches in the country and third in the Big Ten, behind Michigan State's Tom Izzo and Illinois' Brad Underwood. Purdue did not release salary figures in its announcement.

  • Painter, 56, has 501 wins in 21 seasons at Purdue and needs 12 more to pass Gene Keady, his old coach, for the school record. Painter played for Keady and spent a season on his staff as coach-in-waiting before taking over in 2005-06. The two have been Purdue's only head coaches since 1980-81. Among current Big Ten coaches, only Izzo has been in his job longer.

  • "Purdue is a very special place for me, and it's an honor to continue to be the head basketball coach at my alma mater," Painter said.

His recent run is the strongest of his tenure. Purdue's 117 wins since 2022-23 rank fourth nationally, the Boilermakers have made 11 straight NCAA tournaments, and the 2023-24 team, led by two-time national player of the year Zach Edey, reached the national championship game before losing to UConn. Painter has won five Big Ten regular-season titles and three conference tournament titles, including last season's.

This year's team has to replace three four-year starters: Braden Smith, the NCAA career assists leader; Fletcher Loyer, Purdue's career leader in 3-pointers; and forward Trey Kaufmann-Renn, who is playing for Kansas after winning a court fight for another year of eligibility.

  • What to watch: Purdue plays its final exhibition tonight against No. 4 UConn in Hartford at 7 p.m. ET, then opens the season Monday against No. 15 Gonzaga in Las Vegas.
