  • Purdue ended a 19-game Big Ten losing streak Saturday with a 24–17 victory at Illinois, building an early lead and keeping the Illini’s late rally from reaching a tying possession. Ryan Browne threw for 255 yards, and Antonio Harris’ fourth-quarter touchdown gave the Boilermakers enough room to withstand Illinois’ final scoring drive.

The win moved Purdue to 2–3 overall and 1–1 in conference play. Illinois fell to 2–3 and 0–2. Dave Eminian of the Peoria Journal Star reported the end of Purdue’s conference losing streak in his game coverage after the final whistle.

Fighting Illini Athletics published highlights from the October 3 matchup.

  • Purdue scored the first 13 points. Jacobo Echeverria Lozano made field goals from 30 and 34 yards, then Browne found Tra’Mar Harris for a 21-yard touchdown with 4:16 remaining in the second quarter. Illinois finally answered with Katin Houser’s seven-yard touchdown pass to Collin Dixon with 21 seconds left before halftime.

That made it 13–7 at the break. Lozano’s third field goal, a 33-yarder with 6:05 left in the third quarter, restored a nine-point Purdue lead. Illinois had a chance to respond late in the period but came up empty on fourth down near the Boilermakers’ end zone.

Eminian’s play-by-play coverage placed that failed fourth-and-four attempt at the Purdue 16. Instead of turning a promising drive into points, Illinois returned possession to the visitors. The Illini finished the game unsuccessful on their only fourth-down attempt.

  • Ethan Moczulski’s 54-yard field goal with 8:15 remaining in the fourth quarter pulled Illinois within 16–10. Purdue then produced the drive that supplied the winning cushion. Antonio Harris scored from one yard out with 4:29 left, and Browne ran in the two-point conversion for a 24–10 advantage.

Illinois still found the end zone once more. Houser hit Ty Robinson for a two-yard touchdown with 1:26 remaining, cutting the margin to seven. Purdue secured the ensuing onside-kick sequence and finished the game with Browne taking two knees.

Browne completed 18 of 27 passes, throwing one touchdown without an interception. Asaad Waseem caught three passes for 98 yards, including a 61-yard gain. Tra’Mar Harris accounted for the receiving touchdown, while Antonio Harris delivered the late rushing score.

Fame Ijeboi led Purdue’s running game with 65 yards on 19 carries. The Boilermakers totaled 90 rushing yards and 345 yards overall. They committed no turnovers, an important advantage in a game where both teams finished with exactly the same total yardage.

Houser completed 21 of 37 passes for 225 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Dixon caught 10 passes for 116 yards and a score. Illinois ran for 120 yards and earned 26 first downs to Purdue’s 19, but those totals did not erase the early deficit or the empty fourth-down possession. Purdue returns home to face Minnesota on October 10 with its conference skid behind it.
