  • UTSA scored 16 first-half points and made them last Saturday, beating Rice 16–14 in Houston. The Roadrunners did not score after the break, but their defense closed the game with two sacks and a fourth-down stop on Rice's final possession.

Michael Petro made field goals from 32, 53 and 22 yards. Will Henderson III supplied UTSA's only touchdown on a 12-yard run in the second quarter. Rice quarterback Jacurri Brown scored both Owls touchdowns on the ground, including a one-yard run early in the fourth quarter that made the game a two-point contest.

UTSA led 6–0 after Petro's two first-quarter field goals. Brown's 38-yard touchdown run briefly moved Rice ahead 7–6. Henderson's score restored the Roadrunners' lead, and Petro's third field goal with 5:49 left in the second quarter produced the 16–7 halftime margin.

  • Neither team scored in the third quarter. Brown finished Rice's next scoring opportunity from a yard out with 13:35 remaining, but the Owls did not get the field goal or touchdown they needed to move in front. UTSA protected its advantage despite finishing with two turnovers and failing to add second-half points.

The final Rice drive began at its own 18 following a UTSA punt. Brown was sacked for seven yards, completed a nine-yard pass to Braylen Walker, then took another sack for five yards. On fourth down, he ran eight yards but fell short of the line to gain, turning the ball over on downs with 50 seconds left. UTSA finished with kneel-downs.

Henderson ran 18 times for 90 yards. Owen McCown completed 19 of 29 passes for 148 yards and one interception, while David Amador II caught seven passes for 48 yards. UTSA totaled 314 yards, including 166 rushing, and made six of 16 third-down attempts. Both of its fourth-down tries succeeded.

  • Brown finished with 96 rushing yards on 17 carries and completed six of 14 passes for 88 yards. Ben Grice's 40-yard reception accounted for almost half that passing total. Rice gained 232 total yards and struggled on third down, converting only two of 13 opportunities. Four successful fourth-down attempts kept some possessions alive, but the last one ended the comeback chance.

UTSA held the ball for 32:06 and finished with 20 first downs to Rice's 13. Those advantages did not create a comfortable margin, especially after Brown's second touchdown. The result instead depended on the points UTSA collected early and the pressure its defense applied when Rice got the ball back with one last chance to win.

UTSA's official preview identified the trip to Rice as its American Conference opener and listed the Roadrunners at 3–1. The result moves them to 4–1 overall and 1–0 in conference play; Rice, which entered 1–3, drops to 1–4 and 0–1. That narrow opening win gives UTSA a result to protect during a short turnaround before its Thursday, October 8 meeting with South Florida.
