  • Oklahoma State beat West Virginia 41-24 on Saturday night after wiping out a third-quarter deficit and scoring the game's final 20 points. The Cowboys produced 609 yards of offense, led by quarterback Drew Mestemaker's 389 passing yards and three touchdowns. Caleb Hawkins added 180 rushing yards and a score as Oklahoma State turned a game it trailed 24-21 into a comfortable road win.

West Virginia controlled much of the early scoring. The Mountaineers led 14-3 and were still ahead 21-13 during the third quarter. Quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. supplied three rushing touchdowns, while Cam Cook gained 193 yards on 29 carries. Oklahoma State had to chase a ground-heavy West Virginia attack that finished with 335 rushing yards. That production made the later Cowboys run especially striking: West Virginia had moved the ball but could not add another touchdown after the lead changed hands.

Mestemaker brought Oklahoma State level at 21 when he found Terrence Lewis for a four-yard touchdown with 9:33 left in the third. The Cowboys converted the two-point attempt. West Virginia answered with a field goal to go ahead 24-21, but the lead lasted little more than a minute. Hawkins broke a 22-yard touchdown run with 2:40 remaining in the quarter, putting Oklahoma State in front 28-24. ESPN's play-by-play shows the tight cluster of scores that shifted the game.

  • Oklahoma State then added 13 points in the fourth quarter while keeping the Mountaineers off the board. Wyatt Young's six-yard touchdown catch came between two Sam Keltner field goals in the final quarter. Young also had eight catches for 192 yards and a touchdown, giving Mestemaker a deep threat and a target to finish drives close to the goal line. Mestemaker completed 20 of 27 passes with one interception; the Cowboys generated 220 rushing yards to go with their big passing total.

The statistical contrast tells two stories. West Virginia ran for more yards and Cook repeatedly moved the chains, yet Oklahoma State nearly matched the Mountaineers' rushing output while adding a much more productive passing game. The Cowboys' 609 total yards exceeded West Virginia's 467 by 142. The ESPN box score supplies those team totals and the leading player lines.

This was a Big 12 road game Oklahoma State had previewed as a meeting of productive offenses. It played that way for three quarters. The finish belonged entirely to the Cowboys: Hawkins' go-ahead run and a fourth quarter without a West Virginia point turned an exchange of leads into a 17-point victory.
