  • No. 22 Houston visits No. 13 Texas Tech on Friday night for a ranked Big 12 opener built around a direct strength-versus-strength question. Houston enters at 2-0 and takes the nation's longest road winning streak into Lubbock, while Texas Tech is also 2-0 and has won nine straight home games inside Galaxy Stadium. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central on FOX.

Houston's official preview says the Cougars have rushed for at least 225 yards in each of their first two games, including 388 against Southern. The Cougars are averaging 308 rushing yards per game, and their early production has helped them reach No. 22 in the AP poll. The program also says Houston has allowed only 10 rushing yards per game through two weeks, a number that gives the matchup a second defensive edge.

Texas Tech's answer is its front. The Red Raiders have allowed fewer than 100 rushing yards in seven consecutive games, according to the school's official game preview. Houston's ground game therefore meets a defense that has made stopping the run a defining part of its current identity. The winner of that exchange will shape the game's pace and the pressure placed on both quarterbacks.

  • The matchup also gives the Big 12 an early measuring stick. Both teams are ranked, both are unbeaten and each arrives with a statistic that can travel: Houston's rushing production and Texas Tech's run defense. A win would give either program a conference result against a ranked opponent before the league race has had time to settle.

The Red Raiders have also shown they can win away from home. Texas Tech came back to beat Oregon State 35-24 last weekend despite being outgained 417-197, with two fourth-quarter scores deciding the game. Quarterback Will Hammond has completed 46 of 60 passes for 487 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while running back J'Koby Williams leads the team with 187 rushing yards.

Houston's preview lists quarterback Conner Weigman, running back Makhi Hughes and receiver Amare Thomas among its early leaders. The series is close historically, with Texas Tech holding an 18-17-1 edge, and the Red Raiders won last year's meeting 35-11. This is the third time the teams have met as ranked programs.
