New Mexico opened Mountain West play with a 61–7 victory over UTEP on Saturday in Albuquerque, turning five Miners turnovers into a game that became increasingly one-sided after halftime. Toa Fa’avae threw three touchdown passes, and the Lobos added points through an interception return, a blocked-punt safety and a late fumble return.
The Lobos improved to 4–1 overall and 1–0 in the conference. UTEP fell to 1–4 and 0–1 in its first Mountain West football game, against the longtime rival it was meeting for the 81st time.
New Mexico built a 21–0 halftime lead through its offense. James Laubstein scored on a 14-yard run midway through the first quarter. Fa’avae then found Cade Keith for a 12-yard touchdown as the period ended and Bailen George for a 52-yard score with 8:23 remaining in the second quarter.

KVIA’s Paige Wood reported from the halftime score that New Mexico’s front seven had kept UTEP from establishing an offensive rhythm. The Miners’ difficulties became more costly when play resumed: New Mexico added 16 points in the third quarter before UTEP reached the scoreboard.
Austin Brawley returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown with 13:28 left in the third. He later blocked a punt that produced a safety, moving the score to 30–0. Fa’avae’s 10-yard touchdown pass to George with 2:45 left in the period made it 37–0.
Scottre Humphrey opened the fourth-quarter scoring with a one-yard touchdown run. UTEP’s Raymond Moore III finally answered with an 86-yard run, its only touchdown of the afternoon. Cameron Mathews responded for New Mexico with a 54-yard touchdown run less than two minutes later.
Grant Glasgow added a 24-yard field goal late in the game. The final touchdown came with 53 seconds remaining, when Jake DeVos returned a fumble 53 yards. That put the finishing margin at 54 points and gave New Mexico a second touchdown from a defensive return.
Fa’avae completed 15 of 19 passes for 249 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. George scored on both of his catches, totaling 62 yards. DJ Darling had three receptions for 75 yards, while Keith caught four passes for 34 yards and a touchdown.
Mathews led New Mexico’s ground game with 108 yards on six carries. The Lobos finished with 493 yards, including 231 rushing, and converted seven of 12 third downs. They gained 24 first downs to UTEP’s 11.
UTEP totaled 271 yards but lost two fumbles and threw three interceptions. Moore’s long touchdown helped him finish with 135 rushing yards, yet the Miners produced only 101 passing yards. New Mexico’s offense had already created a substantial lead before the return touchdowns and special-teams score widened it. The Lobos have a bye before facing Hawaii on October 17; UTEP next hosts Nevada on October 10.
