Nebraska turned a four-point first-quarter lead into a 24-10 halftime advantage and beat Michigan State 31-13 on Saturday at Spartan Stadium. Anthony Colandrea threw two touchdown passes and Vincent Genatone scored twice, giving the Cornhuskers a strong start to Big Ten play. The margin grew from Nebraska taking its chances and Michigan State losing the ball three times, while the visitors committed no turnovers.
Michigan State struck first on Liam Boyd's 48-yard field goal, but Colandrea answered with a 44-yard touchdown pass to Kwazi Gilmer. Nebraska then built its lead in the second quarter. Mekhi Nelson scored on a four-yard run, Kyle Cunanan made a 32-yard field goal, and Genatone caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Colandrea with two seconds left before halftime. Michigan State's Jaziun Patterson had pulled the Spartans within 17-10 on a two-yard run midway through the quarter. The late Nebraska touchdown restored a two-score cushion before the break.
The Spartans narrowed it to 24-13 on Boyd's 46-yard field goal early in the third quarter. They did not score again. Nebraska closed the scoring when Genatone ran one yard for a touchdown with 10:05 left in the fourth. That sequence mattered because Michigan State had kept within reach for much of the second half, but had not turned possessions into touchdowns. Nebraska's defense allowed only 39 rushing yards, limiting the home team's ability to balance its passing game.

Colandrea completed 15 of 27 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns, and added 66 yards on 10 carries. Gilmer turned four catches into 101 yards and a touchdown. Genatone's receiving and rushing scores came in different phases of the game: the catch just before halftime, then the short run that put it out of reach. Nebraska finished with 369 total yards, including 157 on the ground, and converted six of 13 third downs.
Michigan State quarterback Alessio Milivojevic went 18 of 26 for 208 yards with one interception, according to ESPN's final box score. Patterson led the Spartans on the ground with 54 yards and the team's only touchdown. The home side recorded 22 first downs, matching Nebraska, but gained 257 total yards and went three of eight on third down. Three turnovers left too many promising possessions without points. Those numbers explain how a fairly even first-down count became an 18-point result.
Nebraska moves to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten; Michigan State is 2-2 and 0-1 in conference play. The Cornhuskers' first road and league test ended with a win built on Colandrea's two touchdown throws, a timely halftime strike and a defense that kept the Spartans from finding another touchdown after Patterson's second-quarter run.
