Maiava faces former USC coordinator Lynn in Penn State’s White Out

USC brings a 5-1 record to Beaver Stadium as Penn State seeks its first Big Ten win.

  • Jayden Maiava brings 1,744 passing yards and 15 touchdown passes into Penn State's White Out on Saturday night. The USC quarterback will face a defense coordinated by D'Anton Lynn, who spent the previous two seasons running the Trojans' defense. That familiarity gives the 7:30 p.m. Eastern game on NBC and Peacock a useful tactical angle.

No. 19 USC enters 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten. Penn State is 3-2 and still seeking its first conference victory after losses to Wisconsin and Northwestern. A home win would stop that slide; a USC victory would give the Trojans a second road win this season.

Maiava has completed 131 of 191 attempts, with three interceptions alongside those 15 touchdowns. USC's official notes list the offense at 311.7 passing yards per game and a 52.1 percent third-down conversion rate. Keeping that efficiency against a different secondary is a more useful measure than treating the White Out itself as a prediction.

  • Lynn's knowledge of the offense cuts both ways. StateCollege.com's Joel Haas identifies the coordinator's USC experience as a central matchup while noting that Lincoln Riley also knows the coach's approach. The game will test how each staff uses that history, without guaranteeing either side an advantage.

The Ruffino & Joe Show's Week 6 preview includes USC–Penn State alongside LSU–Kentucky and Indiana–Nebraska. It provides additional pregame discussion of the evening matchup.

  • Penn State linebacker Tony Rojas gives the defense a named playmaker to follow. The school's game notes credit him with 34 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and two interceptions. He recorded a career-high 3.5 tackles for loss against Northwestern despite Penn State's defeat.

  • At the other end, Rocco Becht's passing game could determine whether Penn State keeps pace. Eight of his 10 touchdown passes this season have covered at least 15 yards, according to the official notes. Those completions matter against a USC team that held Washington scoreless for the final 28 minutes, 30 seconds of last week's 25-21 win.

Saturday is the first meeting at Beaver Stadium since 1994. Penn State won the most recent matchup, 33-30 in overtime at USC in 2024, after trailing 20-6 at halftime. This year's teams arrive with different records and different staffs, but another close finish would put late execution under the same bright lights.
