Louisiana’s defense denied Charlotte an offensive touchdown in a 34-7 win Saturday at Jerry Richardson Stadium. The 49ers’ seven points came on a 54-yard fumble return by Jaylon Johnson late in the first half. The Ragin’ Cajuns answered with 24 consecutive points after the break, turning a three-point halftime lead into a comfortable road result. Louisiana improved to 3-1; Charlotte dropped to 0-4.
Tony Sterner opened the scoring with a 29-yard field goal in the first quarter. Lunch Winfield then found Steven Blanco for a three-yard touchdown pass in the second, giving Louisiana a 10-0 lead. Charlotte’s defense provided its only breakthrough when Johnson recovered a Louisiana fumble and returned it 54 yards for a score with 24 seconds left in the half. At 10-7, the game was still within one possession despite a wide difference in offensive production.
Louisiana separated after halftime. JJ Garner ran seven yards for a third-quarter touchdown. Sterner hit a 44-yard field goal early in the fourth, and Winfield’s nine-yard scoring run made it 27-7 with 9:21 remaining. Anthony Reagan Jr. added a four-yard touchdown run in the final minute. The Ragin’ Cajuns scored in every quarter and did not allow Charlotte another point after Johnson’s return.

The live ESPN box score puts Louisiana ahead 292-137 in total yards and 21-6 in first downs. Charlotte managed only 26 rushing yards and converted one of 11 third downs. Louisiana held the ball for 40:53, more than twice Charlotte’s 19:07, and forced four 49ers turnovers while committing one. Those numbers explain why the halftime score was closer than the final margin: Charlotte had scored on defense but could not sustain possessions with its offense.
Winfield completed 19 of 26 passes for 149 yards and one touchdown. He also scored on the ground. Charlotte quarterback Cole Gonzales went nine of 16 for 68 yards and an interception in the listed leaders. Jaden Barnes caught five passes for 45 yards, but the 49ers’ offense never reached the end zone. Louisiana’s Darrell Smith led its rushers with 43 yards on 10 carries.
The Louisiana team preview described this as the end of the Ragin’ Cajuns’ nonconference schedule and their first football meeting with Charlotte. The victory sends Louisiana toward league play with a winning record. Charlotte must seek its first win after a night when a defensive touchdown kept it close only until the third quarter. This account uses the verified final and play sequence; it does not assign blame for individual turnovers without a supported play review.
