  • Keenan Phillips scored four touchdowns, including a 100-yard kickoff return, as South Alabama outlasted Arkansas State 56-49 on Thursday night in Jonesboro. The Jaguars then kept the ball for the final 6:51 to deny the Red Wolves another possession in a game that produced 15 touchdowns.

Phillips gained 157 rushing yards on 19 carries and scored three times on the ground. His 42-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter gave South Alabama a 56-35 lead. The official team video captured the run that brought his total to four touchdowns for the evening.

  • Arkansas State kept answering. Trey Owens threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jabari Bush at 12:18 of the fourth, then finished an 81-yard drive with a 1-yard run at 6:51. Those scores cut the margin to seven, and the Red Wolves needed one more defensive stop to give Owens a chance to tie the game.

  • South Alabama's final possession never returned the ball. Jared Hollins converted fourth-and-one with a 5-yard run. Phillips later gained 10 yards on third-and-three with 1:48 remaining, forcing Arkansas State to use its final timeout. The Jaguars finished with a short run and two kneeldowns as the last seconds ran off.

That closing drive made the running game decisive even after Arkansas State had produced more total offense. South Alabama rushed for 296 yards and converted all four of its fourth-down attempts. PJ Martin supplied 95 yards and a touchdown, while Hollins ran for two scores and threw a 7-yard touchdown to Rod Gibbs.

Phillips' kickoff return had supplied an earlier swing. Timothy Carter tied the game at 7 with a 1-yard run late in the first quarter. Phillips took the ensuing kickoff the length of the field, immediately putting South Alabama back in front.

  • The teams continued trading touchdowns through the second quarter. Carter's second short rushing score gave Arkansas State a 21-14 lead. Phillips tied it with a 3-yard run, then Hollins scored twice before halftime. Owens found Hunter Summers for a 20-yard touchdown with 32 seconds left in the half, leaving South Alabama ahead 34-28.

Phillips opened the third-quarter scoring with a 23-yard run, followed by Hollins' successful two-point rush. Hollins' touchdown pass to Gibbs extended the lead to 49-28 before Owens found Solomon Baggett for a 4-yard score late in the quarter. Phillips' long fourth-quarter run then established the cushion Arkansas State almost erased.

Owens completed 32 of 43 passes for 418 yards and four touchdowns, with two interceptions. Summers caught nine passes for 145 yards and two scores. Arkansas State amassed 516 total yards and converted eight of 10 third downs, but committed three turnovers.

South Alabama improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Sun Belt. Arkansas State fell to 2-4 and 0-2. The Jaguars finished with 372 total yards and just 76 passing yards, yet their rushing finishes, kickoff return and final possession were enough to survive the Red Wolves' passing production.
