  • Hank Brown found Reece Vander Zee for a 16-yard touchdown as time expired, giving Iowa a 20-19 win at Michigan on Saturday. The Hawkeyes began that final possession at their own 9 with 1:46 left. ESPN's official play-by-play records an 11-play, 91-yard drive capped by Brown's throw on the last play. A game that had turned toward Michigan with less than 12 minutes remaining ended with Iowa in front by one.

The final drive needed to cover almost the whole field after a Michigan punt pinned Iowa deep. Brown found Addison Ostrenga for 29 yards to the Michigan 16 with two seconds shown in the play sequence. The next scoring entry is the touchdown to Vander Zee at 0:00. Iowa had missed a 51-yard field-goal attempt at 2:33, and Michigan took possession with a chance to drain the clock. The Wolverines gained seven yards on three plays before punting with 1:46 left, giving Brown another chance.

Michigan had briefly reclaimed control in the fourth quarter. Brown's first touchdown pass to Vander Zee, another 16-yarder, put Iowa ahead 14-13 at 14:02. Bryce Underwood answered on the next Michigan series with a 49-yard touchdown pass to JJ Buchanan at 11:59. The two-point pass failed, leaving the score 19-14. That failed conversion did not decide the game alone, but it meant Iowa's eventual touchdown could win without a successful kick.

  • The game had been close before those late swings. Buchanan caught an 18-yard Underwood touchdown in the first quarter. Iowa's Braeden Jackson returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown just 14 seconds later, tying it at seven. Trey Butkowski kicked field goals from 41 and 22 yards in the second and third quarters, giving Michigan a 13-7 lead entering the fourth. Iowa went without an offensive score through the first three quarters, then Brown and Vander Zee connected twice in the final period.

The official box score shows Brown completing 21 of 35 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Vander Zee caught five passes for 66 yards, with two scores. Underwood threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns, and Buchanan had five catches for 130 yards and both Michigan touchdowns. Michigan outgained Iowa 429-285 and held the ball for almost nine minutes longer. Those advantages still could not close the game after the late punt.

Iowa's defense also forced a Michigan turnover while the Hawkeyes' offense finished without one. The numbers explain how narrow the margin was, but the decisive sequence is simpler: Michigan could not end the game on its final possession, and Brown used the full field and the final seconds to find Vander Zee in the end zone.
