Jahmyr Gibbs scored his third touchdown with 2:25 left, taking an 11-yard pass from Jared Goff to give Detroit a 31-24 win over the Jets on Sunday. New York had erased a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit, but the Lions answered immediately. Chuck Clark then sacked Geno Smith and forced a fumble with 51 seconds left, ending the Jets' final possession. The NFL's Week 3 account and ESPN's final play log confirm the late sequence.
Detroit built its lead in stages. Jake Bates opened the scoring with a 30-yard field goal in the second quarter. Smith's 24-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq put the Jets ahead 7-3, but Goff found Amon-Ra St. Brown from four yards out before halftime. Gibbs took over after the break. His 17-yard run made it 17-7 in the third quarter, and a one-yard run on the first play of the fourth stretched Detroit's edge to 24-10.
Smith did not let the game finish there. He hit Jeremy Ruckert for a four-yard touchdown, though the ensuing two-point pass failed. With 4:06 remaining, Smith found Garrett Wilson near the goal line on a play initially ruled short. Replay changed it to a 23-yard touchdown, and Smith completed the two-point pass to Sterling Shepard for a 24-24 tie. That comeback was substantial: Smith finished 31 of 37 for 321 yards and three touchdowns, while Sadiq caught seven passes for 105 yards. Wilson added 10 catches for 107 yards.

The Lions' response gave Gibbs the decisive play. Detroit moved downfield and Goff found him for the 11-yard score. The NFL's clip records the finish. Gibbs ended with 99 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on 20 carries, plus seven receptions for 65 yards and the winning touchdown. Goff completed 25 of 32 for 269 yards and two scores. Detroit gained 381 total yards, 131 on the ground, according to the ESPN box score.
New York still had a chance after the kickoff. Smith moved the Jets inside Detroit territory, but Clark's strip sack at the Lions' 41 allowed Jack Campbell to recover. Goff knelt out the remaining time. The Jets' 335 total yards and three touchdown passes show how much pressure they put on Detroit's secondary. The Lions won because Gibbs supplied the late answer and the defense produced its one needed takeaway. An Associated Press report also confirms the comeback and finishing sequence.
