Jahmyr Gibbs brings 463 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns into Sunday Night Football against a Carolina defense rebuilding its secondary. Detroit visits the Panthers at Bank of America Stadium on October 4, with kickoff at 8:20 p.m. Eastern on NBC. The Lions enter 2–1; Carolina is 1–2.
Detroit's game-day preview gives Gibbs 307 rushing yards, 156 receiving yards and 18 catches through three games. Carolina has allowed 580 rushing yards over that span. His involvement as both a runner and receiver makes the matchup demanding even before Jared Goff looks outside to Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.
The Lions' Brooke Chesney outlines the night's storylines in this pregame video from Charlotte.

Goff faces a changed secondary
Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson went on injured reserve Wednesday. Akayleb Evans and rookie Will Lee III step into the vacated starting roles, with Robert Rochell elevated from the practice squad for this game. Detroit offensive coordinator Drew Petzing has described the replacement personnel as an extra scouting uncertainty: Carolina can adjust its defensive approach as well as its lineup.

Bryce Young has thrown for 939 yards and seven touchdowns through three games. Carolina can threaten through the air, provided its protection and available receivers can sustain the passing game.
Jalen Coker is inactive with a quadriceps injury, joining Xavier Legette, who is on injured reserve and must miss at least four games. Carolina's available receivers are Tetairoa McMillan, Brycen Tremayne, John Metchie III, David Moore and Ja'seem Reed, whom the team elevated Saturday. Coker's absence opens playing time without settling how the targets will be divided.
Left guard Damien Lewis is also inactive, with Corey Bullock replacing him. Right tackle Monroe Freeling cleared concussion protocol Saturday and has been cleared to play. Carolina's other inactives are tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders, emergency third quarterback Haynes King, tackle Albert Reese and defensive tackle Cam Jackson.
Detroit cornerback D.J. Reed is active after carrying a questionable designation with a rib injury. Guard Ben Bartch is out with a foot injury; Tyler Conklin, Bishop Fitzgerald, Ahmed Hassanein, Devin White and Mekhi Wingo are healthy scratches. Both teams' official inactive reports were available before this preview's 8 p.m. Eastern update.
Darren Waller is another matchup to follow. He has 10 receptions and two touchdowns, while Detroit's first three opponents combined for 29 tight-end catches, 351 yards and six scores. Waller remains part of Carolina's passing-game matchup as the receivers adjust to Coker's absence.
