  • Cameron Fens will not play in North Carolina’s exhibition against Southern California on Friday, coach Michael Malone said Wednesday at ACC Tipoff. The transfer center has been practicing, but Malone described him as currently ineligible while the process concerning his availability continues.

That distinction matters for the first look at Malone’s team. Daily practice participation does not mean Fens is cleared to appear in the exhibition. Malone said he hoped for clarity soon; he did not announce a resolution or a return date.

  • R.L. Bynum’s on-site Tar Heel Tribune report places the USC game at 7 p.m. Friday in Greensboro, on ACC Network. UNC’s official roster announcement separately identifies October 9 at First Horizon Coliseum as the preseason opener.

  • The roster gives the exhibition a broader purpose than one player’s status. Carolina announced five returning players and 11 newcomers, including four freshmen, six college transfers and another international player. Fens arrived from South Dakota; the transfer group also includes players from Buffalo, Utah, NC State, Virginia Tech and Northwestern.

Among the returners are Jarin Stevenson, Jaydon Young and Isaiah Denis. With so many new combinations available, Friday offers coaches game film against a different opponent after weeks of work against their own players.

Malone said the exhibitions would let him try different groupings and see what needed improvement. In the full press conference, he emphasized defense and rebounding as the foundation for an up-tempo team, along with sharing the ball. Those are stated priorities to watch against USC, rather than conclusions about how the new roster will perform.

  • Bynum reported two more exhibitions: Indiana in Indianapolis on October 18 and Charlotte at home on October 27. The regular-season opener is November 2 against Western Carolina.

For Friday, the immediate questions are which combinations function together and how Carolina adjusts without Fens available. The exhibition can begin to answer those basketball questions. It cannot settle his eligibility, and Malone’s Wednesday comments offered no basis for predicting when that separate process will end.
