  • Anthony Edwards scored 45 points and made nine 3-pointers Wednesday night as the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Miami Heat 131-106 at Kaseya Center, spoiling Giannis Antetokounmpo's first game with Miami. LaMelo Ball scored 21 in his Minnesota debut.

Edwards shot 16 of 29, went 9 of 17 from deep and grabbed 10 rebounds. The NBA said he is the first player in league history with at least 45 points, 10 rebounds and five 3-pointers in a season opener. He also joined Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan as the only players with 40 or more points in more than one opener, according to the Associated Press. Edwards scored 41 in last season's opener at Portland.

  • Antetokounmpo scored 35 on 13-of-19 shooting with six rebounds before fouling out, and 21 of his points came in the first half. Bam Adebayo added 15 points, Davion Mitchell had 11 points and 11 assists, Andrew Wiggins scored 11 and Klay Thompson made three 3-pointers for 10 points.

  • The game was tight until late in the second quarter. Minnesota then went on a 23-7 run that carried into the third and turned a one-point lead into a 78-61 edge, per AP, with Edwards and Ball combining for 17 points in that stretch. Miami got within eight midway through the third quarter. Minnesota answered with a 45-23 run in which Edwards scored 18 and the Heat missed 11 of 12 3-point attempts.

The 3-point line was the difference. Minnesota made 21 of 50 threes and Miami made 8 of 33, a 63-24 edge in points from deep. The Wolves also won the boards 52-34, with Rudy Gobert pulling down 15 rebounds, and scored 31 points off 19 Miami turnovers.

Ball went 5 of 13 from 3-point range and had six assists. Jaden McDaniels scored 17 on 8-of-11 shooting, Ayo Dosunmu had 16 off the bench and Jonathan Kuminga added 12 points and four steals. Minnesota played without Donte DiVincenzo, who was listed as out.

  • Miami has lost three straight season openers, the third time that has happened in franchise history, AP reported.

What's next: Minnesota visits Orlando on Friday, and Miami hosts Detroit the same night. The number to watch for the Heat is that 24% from 3. Antetokounmpo got his points, and the shooting around him has to be better for that to hold up.
