Kent State opened Mid-American Conference play with a 26-13 win over Ball State at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium. Dru DeShields accounted for the Golden Flashes' first two touchdowns, throwing seven yards to Braylon White and running seven yards himself. Sean Leonard's 53-yard field goal with three seconds left in the half gave Kent State a 17-0 lead.
Ball State responded in the third quarter when Tyler Mizzell found Donovan Hamilton for a six-yard touchdown. Kent State answered with DeShields' five-yard touchdown pass to Da'Realyst Clark. The Cardinals' next possession ended with a safety when Mizzell was sacked, pushing Kent State's lead to 26-7. Jalen Bonds scored on a 10-yard run with 3:24 left, but Ball State's failed two-point conversion left the Cardinals needing two scores.
DeShields completed 16 of 25 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns, and he added 76 rushing yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Clark caught six passes for 73 yards and a score. Kent State gained 354 total yards, including 189 passing and 165 rushing, converted 6 of 14 third downs and held the ball for 35:18. The Golden Flashes did not commit a turnover.

Ball State finished with 210 yards, only 46 rushing and 164 passing. Mizzell went 16-for-27 for 164 yards and one touchdown. Hamilton led the Cardinals with seven catches for 80 yards and the scoring reception, while Bonds carried 11 times for 36 yards and a touchdown. Ball State converted 5 of 14 third downs and held possession for 24:42. The safety was the game's only defensive score and came from a Kent State sack rather than a turnover.
Kent State's first-half control rested on field position and time. The Golden Flashes held a 17-0 lead before Ball State reached the end zone, then answered the Cardinals' first touchdown with Clark's reception. Kent State's 165 rushing yards kept the offense ahead of the chains, while the Cardinals' 46 rushing yards limited their ability to sustain late drives. Ball State's second touchdown narrowed the margin but arrived too late to change the result.
The scoring distribution also showed Kent State's balance. DeShields supplied one touchdown with his legs and two through the air, Leonard added the long field goal, and the defense created the safety. Ball State needed a two-point conversion after Bonds' late run, but the attempt failed, leaving Kent State's earlier possessions decisive.
The victory moved Kent State to 2-2 and began its conference schedule with a home win. Ball State fell to 1-3. The safety remained the game's key defensive swing, making the fourth-quarter margin 26-7 before Ball State's late touchdown.
