Colts-Chiefs preview: Indianapolis puts defensive communication under the lights
The Colts are moving green-dot duties to Akeem Davis-Gaither and must solve Kansas City’s run game in a Sunday Night Football matchup that also excludes receiver Ashton Dulin.

Indianapolis enters Sunday Night Football against Kansas City with a defensive repair plan that is more specific than a generic bounce-back message. The Colts' official Week 2 preview says linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither will take over the green-dot communication duties after the defense struggled to get aligned in a 41-23 loss to Baltimore.
That change puts the middle linebacker at the center of the pre-snap operation and frees safety Cam Bynum to concentrate on the back end. Indianapolis' coaches described the adjustment as a way to help the unit set formations earlier and play faster. It is a direct response to the problem the Colts identified on film, which makes the first few drives at Arrowhead a useful test of whether the correction is real.
The second problem is tackling. Kansas City ran for 220 yards in Week 1, and the Colts' preview highlighted Kenneth Walker III's 14 broken tackles in his Chiefs debut. The response cannot be limited to one defender or one blitz call. Indianapolis has to fit the run cleanly, wrap up in space and avoid turning short gains into the kind of second-effort plays that let Kansas City control the pace.

The Colts also ruled out receiver Ashton Dulin because of an ankle injury after he missed all three practices. That removes one option from the rotation and makes the offense's ability to keep up with Kansas City's early possessions more important. Indianapolis' viewing information confirms the game for 8:20 p.m. ET Sunday on NBC.
Kansas City’s Week 1 rushing output also changes the way Patrick Mahomes' return is read. Mahomes threw for 184 yards with two touchdowns and an interception against Denver, but the Chiefs did not need him to carry every down when Walker and the run game were creating efficient second downs. Indianapolis must decide how much safety help to devote to Mahomes without opening the interior run lanes the Chiefs showed they can exploit.
The Colts' clearest path is to make the game about down-to-down execution. A cleaner alignment call, a successful first tackle and a third-down stop would each answer a question raised by Week 1. If Indianapolis cannot make those fixes, the Chiefs' run volume can shorten the game and leave the Colts chasing the score.
The Sunday Night Football kickoff is 8:20 p.m. ET at Arrowhead. The official preview, injury update and team video all point to the same decisive theme: Indianapolis has to communicate and tackle well enough to force Kansas City back into a less comfortable script.
