  • Clemson’s first conference game on the West Coast comes Friday night in Berkeley, where California opens its ACC home schedule. Both teams are 2-1 overall and 1-0 in league play, according to the Cal preview and Clemson game guide. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Pacific, 10:30 p.m. Eastern, at California Memorial Stadium. ESPN has the telecast.

The matchup puts two recent conference wins into a new setting. Cal beat Syracuse on the road before a 49-7 nonconference win over Wagner last Saturday. Quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele completed 27 of 33 passes for 413 yards and three touchdowns in that game, the Bears’ official preview says. His 866 passing yards through three games rank fourth in the ACC. Clemson’s 28-20 comeback against North Carolina required two late touchdowns after the Tigers trailed 20-15 with 6:34 left. Freshman Tait Reynolds threw for 215 yards in his first career start, and Gideon Davidson ran for 105 yards and a touchdown.

Cal’s secondary presents a specific test for Clemson’s passing game. Safety Kingston Lopa has five interceptions across three games, including three against Syracuse, according to Cal’s preview. The same report lists Cal’s defense first in the ACC in passing efficiency allowed and its offense fourth in the league in passing yards per game entering Friday. Those early numbers describe the matchup; they do not decide how Clemson will attack or whether the first three games predict this one.

  • The schools have met only once, when Cal beat Clemson 37-13 in the Citrus Bowl after the 1991 season. Clemson’s game guide calls this the Tigers’ first ACC contest on the West Coast since the league expanded. Cal will recognize its 1991 team at the stadium Friday, giving the second meeting a direct link to the first.

A conference win would move either team to 2-0 in ACC play. The game’s sharper question is whether Clemson can protect the ball against a defense already producing takeaways while matching Cal’s passing output. Friday’s result, rather than the early-season rankings, will answer it.
