  • Chris Cole returned an Oklahoma fumble 85 yards for a touchdown, and No. 2 Georgia beat the Sooners 41-13 on Saturday in Athens. Cole's second-quarter score turned a 14-0 lead into 21-0. The Bulldogs added another touchdown before halftime and took a 28-0 advantage to the locker room. Oklahoma's first points did not arrive until the third quarter.

Georgia began with a 2-yard touchdown run from Chauncey Bowens late in the first quarter. Gunner Stockton found Talyn Taylor for a 35-yard touchdown early in the second. Cole's return followed at 8:58 of that period, and Bowens scored again from six yards with 57 seconds left before the break. The official scoring log shows four Georgia touchdowns before Oklahoma answered. The defensive touchdown mattered because the Bulldogs did not need a long offensive drive to widen the gap.

The Sooners eventually scored on a 17-yard John Mateer pass to Rocky Beers with 10:26 left in the third. Their two-point run failed, leaving the score 28-6. Peyton Woodring kicked a 45-yard field goal for Georgia later in the quarter. Dwight Phillips Jr. then broke a 54-yard touchdown run early in the fourth, and Woodring added a 49-yard field goal for a 41-6 lead. Mateer's 14-yard pass to Manny Choice supplied Oklahoma's final touchdown.

  • Georgia's offensive production was efficient rather than overwhelming. The ESPN box score gives the Bulldogs 306 total yards, only 10 more than Oklahoma's 296. Stockton completed 14 of 25 passes for 171 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Taylor caught four passes for 110 yards, while Phillips ran eight times for 84 yards. Bowens finished with two rushing touchdowns. The decisive gap came from field position, finishing drives and Oklahoma's giveaways, not a huge yardage advantage.

Oklahoma committed four turnovers and converted only two of 14 third downs. Mateer completed 25 of 34 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted once. He also carried 15 times for seven net rushing yards; the Sooners finished with 65 rushing yards as a team. Beers caught eight passes for 84 yards. Those receiving numbers show Oklahoma could move the ball in portions of the game, but the offense never made the first-half margin competitive.

Cole's impact went beyond the return touchdown. He also recovered another Mateer fumble and advanced it 23 yards late in the first half, according to the Associated Press. Georgia converted that short field into Bowens's second touchdown run. The Bulldogs entered this home game unbeaten and ranked second, according to their official game preview. They left 4-0 after turning Oklahoma's mistakes into a 28-point halftime lead.
