Chiefs bring Justin Watson back as Thornton heads to injured reserve
The practice-squad reunion while Kansas City adjusts its receiver group after Thornton’s ankle injury.

Justin Watson is returning to the Chiefs’ practice squad, coach Andy Reid said Monday, as Kansas City prepares to place Tyquan Thornton on injured reserve following his ankle injury.
The decision brings back a receiver who played for Kansas City from 2022 through 2024. Reid cited Watson’s familiarity with the offense and his ability to contribute after a short review of the system, according to Arrowhead Pride’s account of Monday’s media session.
Watson’s signing provides another option for a receiver group losing Thornton. It places him on the practice squad, so a return to the organization does not by itself make him part of the next game’s active roster.

Thornton dislocated his ankle in Week 4. The NFL’s Monday roundup says he is expected to be out into the postseason. That is an injury outlook, not an announced return date.
Reid also addressed how the available receivers could absorb more work. Xavier Worthy already has a substantial role in the passing game, the coach said. He indicated that rookie Cyrus Allen could get more opportunities.
Watson gives Kansas City another experienced receiver as Reid considers the players available for its next game.
Kansas City is 4-0 coming out of its bye. Watson’s knowledge of the offense can help the team add depth quickly, while his actual game-day role will depend on subsequent roster and lineup decisions.
