Castellanos and Trimble can play under temporary injunction

A Kentucky judge’s Friday order protects 38 athlete plaintiffs while the injunction is in effect.

  • Texas Tech quarterback Thomas Castellanos and Louisville guard Seth Trimble can play under a new temporary injunction in their fifth-year eligibility lawsuit, On3 reported Friday.

  • The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams separately reported that Judge Brian C. Edwards of Kentucky’s Jefferson Circuit Court issued the order Friday for a group of 38 athlete plaintiffs. The protection allows them to compete while the injunction is in effect.

For Castellanos, the decision restores an option Texas Tech had lost earlier this month. He played in the Red Raiders’ first four games, then sat out the October 3 win at Colorado after the Kentucky Court of Appeals dissolved an earlier injunction on October 2, Williams reported.

  • Texas Tech has used Castellanos primarily in short-yardage and red-zone packages behind Will Hammond. The Red Raiders’ official roster lists him as a fifth-year quarterback who arrived from Florida State during preseason camp.

Trimble joined Louisville in August after four seasons at North Carolina. The Cardinals’ official roster lists him as a fifth-year guard.

The Friday order is temporary and applies to the athletes in this case. It does not settle the NCAA’s eligibility disputes for every member of the 2022 class. The lawsuit concerns athletes who had already used four seasons before the NCAA’s transition to a five-season eligibility system.
