Arizona beat Northern Illinois 42-17 on Saturday night, separating through quarterback Noah Fifita’s touchdown passing and Caleb Smith’s 69-yard punt return. The Wildcats turned a close opening into a three-score finish by pairing explosive offense with a special-teams play that changed field position immediately.
Arizona’s scoring sequence included Fifita touchdown passes to Chris Hunter III, Isaiah Mizell and Tre Spivey. Smith then added a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown, a play that gave Arizona points without asking the offense to drive. Northern Illinois had opened with JJ Schlenhardt’s 38-yard field goal and Taron Dickens’ 52-yard touchdown pass to Cam Thompson, but the Huskies could not match Arizona’s response.
Fifita’s distribution kept the Wildcats from becoming one-dimensional. Arizona repeatedly found the end zone through the air, while the punt return forced Northern Illinois to defend a shortened field. The result was a 42-point night in which Arizona’s biggest swings came from different units rather than one repeated matchup.

The turning point was Smith’s return touchdown after Northern Illinois had shown it could produce an explosive pass. Arizona’s answer changed the scoreboard from a competitive game into a margin the Huskies had to chase. Once Northern Illinois needed more aggressive throws, Arizona could play with the lead and make the Huskies string together drives instead of relying on isolated gains.
Northern Illinois had the first two answers. JJ Schlenhardt opened with a 38-yard field goal, then Taron Dickens hit Cam Thompson for a 52-yard touchdown. Arizona responded immediately through Noah Fifita, who threw a 38-yard touchdown to Chris Hunter III, a 14-yard score to Isaiah Mizell and a 10-yard touchdown to Tre Spivey. That sequence turned Northern Illinois' early explosive play into a short-lived lead instead of a game plan.
Caleb Smith's 69-yard punt return for a touchdown was the largest swing. It came after the Huskies had shown they could threaten from distance and gave Arizona points without another offensive snap. Fifita later added a 3-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Powell and a 30-yard scoring run, while Northern Illinois managed only Elijah Porter's 1-yard touchdown in the closing stretch. Arizona's scoring was distributed across offense and special teams, with Fifita's passing and rushing production forcing the Huskies to defend every level. The 42-17 final followed that sequence: Northern Illinois created isolated gains, and Arizona kept stacking complete scoring drives and field-position wins. Arizona also finished with three separate touchdown methods, a passing score, a punt return and a quarterback run, before the final defensive stand.
