Notre Dame and Michigan State meet Saturday night at Notre Dame Stadium with both teams 2–0 and the 80th meeting in a series that has not been played since 2017. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on NBC and Peacock, the first of Notre Dame’s three home prime-time games on the 2026 schedule. The winner takes the Megaphone Trophy, first awarded in 1949.

Notre Dame opened the home schedule with a 52–0 win over Rice, while Michigan State followed victories over Toledo and Eastern Michigan with its first trip to South Bend under coach Pat Fitzgerald. The early records are clean, but the opponents change here. Michigan State has a more physical front and a more experienced game plan than Notre Dame’s first two opponents, while the Irish will be playing their first home night game of the season.

The matchup starts with Notre Dame’s run defense against Michigan State’s ability to stay on schedule. The Irish cannot allow the Spartans to turn ordinary first downs into long drives; Michigan State’s best route to a close game is to protect the ball, shorten the contest and force Notre Dame to finish every possession. Notre Dame’s offense, meanwhile, needs to keep the box from becoming crowded. If the Irish can make Michigan State defend the perimeter and intermediate passing game, the run lanes should become more usable as the night develops.

Field position will matter if the game stays tight. Notre Dame’s defense has to turn pressure into stops rather than simply creating a few disruptive snaps, and the offense needs touchdowns when it crosses the 20. Michigan State can remain within reach by forcing field goals and avoiding the kind of short-field mistakes that turn a road rivalry game quickly.

The larger question is whether Notre Dame can control a credible opponent without turning the night into a series of emergencies. The Irish are favored at home and have the stronger national expectation. Michigan State has the history, a clean record and a chance to make the first major Notre Dame game of the season uncomfortable. The answer will come from the line of scrimmage, the red zone and the fourth quarter.
