Cubs face Atlanta with twelve games left and little separation
The next three-game series begins Monday night at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs enter their Atlanta series at 83-67, with only 12 regular-season games remaining. The Braves arrive at 88-62, according to the Sun-Times' Sunday report. That makes this a demanding part of Chicago's closing schedule.
Monday's opener is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. Central, with David Peterson against Reynaldo López, as listed in Cubs Insider's look ahead. Probable starters can change; the MLB listing is the place to check before first pitch.
Chicago took its Pittsburgh series but finished with a one-run loss. That leaves two immediate jobs against Atlanta: keep a close game from opening up when the starter exits, and turn baserunners into more than a single run when an inning offers several scoring chances.

The three-game series is large enough to change the feel of the final stretch without deciding it alone. A useful approach is to watch the decisions inside it: which relievers get the tight innings, whether the lineup extends rallies and how effectively the starters limit extra traffic.
There is little time left to wait for those pieces to fit. Atlanta provides the next direct test, beginning Monday at Wrigley.
